Hyde Developments Glide Plate
According to Wilko, I had the proto type model, Boss alloy bash plate on my DRZ 400. It had served me well and taken a hiding. DRZ 400's aren't designed to be airborne, so when the big girl comes a gutser on an erosion bank jump, the frame rails need a little protection.
I was given the opportunity to try out a Glide Plate made from High Impact Material by Hyde Developments. The web site does not detail what the glide plate is made of but it looks like a polycarbonate plastic. It is similar in looks to the black bellies found on KTM's although it is not a quick release type. To be honest I have been sceptical of these in the past. So I was curious to see how it would perform. Since black is a slimming colour and the DRZ is known to be weighty, the visual transformation was immediately gratifying. The DRZ looked like it had had liposuction. It's big silver belly was gone and in the right light with the black belly, it looks like the bike has "six pack" ab's.
Although I didn't have scales to weigh the two plates, it felt like the glide plate was a quarter the weight of the alloy bash plate.
The Hyde Developments glide plate easily bolted on with the supplied bolts. The glide plate fits around the motor very snugly. Because the space between the glide plate and the motor is so tight, washing out the mud with the pressure washer is a bit harder now.

Used and abused, the Hyde Glide Plate
seems to stand up well to punishment.
As I did with the alloy plate I might glue some rubber spacers between the frame rails and the glide plate to give it room to flex before dinting the rails on a high impact. The rubber spacers also allow the dirt to be washed out and not build up behind the rails. The glide plate already has some scars on it, so now it matches the rest of the bike. The Hyde glide plate has only been on for one ride through very rocky terrain and coped quite well.
I anticipate it will have a long and abusive future.
