As many of you know 2009 is the year that most of the Japanese manufacturers have released fuel injected four-stroke dirt bikes. There is no doubt that the carburetor has worked well over many decades but fuel injection has the ability to address the main shortcoming of the carburetor. That shortcoming is the ability to function over a wide range of elevations without needed to make adjustment. Last year we had a racer enter the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb where there is an elevation change of over 7400 feet from the base to the top of the mountain. With a carburetor there was no way to make the bike run great at the bottom and the top of the course. While many people will never experience this type of elevation change during a ride, many of our customers do ride in the mountains where there is enough of an elevation change to make drivability a concern.
While fuel injection delivers great performance at any elevation straight out of the box, just like a carburetor there is room for improvement. Bikes come from the factory with programming in the control module that is often designed for engine longevity, EPA requirements, or to cover a wide range of styles. Carburetors used to come tuned the same way and we have seen a whole industry devoted to improve their operation. With the switch to fuel injection this industry is not going away, it just evolving. No longer are we going to change jets and shim needles, but instead we are going to be hooking up a laptop and logging data and downloading changes to the control modules on the bikes.
At OTD Denver we have always been on the forefront of carburetor tuning. Especially with regard to four-stroke single cylinder dirt bikes. While the tools, equipment and methods have changed our commitment has not. We have already begun our fuel injection tuning program by offering customized maps for the 2009 Honda CRF-450R. With our map for max power we are producing about three horsepower over stock and made the bike easier to start. Some other customers have requested that we make the power mellower for trail riding are we are able to do that as well. These maps are offered at affordable prices and we are willing to work with you until we get the results you desire. If you have a programmer we can e-mail maps. If not we offer same day turnaround on all ECM sent to us. Additionally, once Dynojet releases their Powercommander 5 we will be offering sales and mapping for those as well. This is something we are very excited about and we encourage you to ask any questions. If you do have questions please e-mail us at tuning@otdcyclesports.com .
